Angels & Demons

by admin on May.16, 2009, under Thriller

The team behind the global phenomenon “The Da Vinci Code” returns for the highly anticipated “Angels & Demons,” based upon the bestselling novel by Dan Brown. Tom Hanks reprises his role as Harvard religious expert Robert Langdon, who once again finds that forces with ancient roots are willing to stop at nothing, even murder, to advance their goals.

When Langdon discovers evidence of the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati—the most powerful underground organization in history—he also faces a deadly threat to the existence of the secret organization’s most despised enemy: the Catholic Church. When Langdon learns that the clock is ticking on an unstoppable Illuminati time bomb, he jets to Rome, where he joins forces with Vittoria Vetra, a beautiful and enigmatic Italian scientist. Embarking on a nonstop, action-packed hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and even to the heart of the most secretive vault on earth, Langdon and Vetra will follow a 400-year-old trail of ancient symbols that mark the Vatican’s only hope for survival.

Along Came A Spider

by admin on May.03, 2009, under Thriller

When a senator’s daughter is kidnapped from her high-security private school, the kidnapper (nicely played by the underrated Michael Wincott) draws Alex Cross (Morgan Freeman) into the case, knowing that the psychologist-detective’s involvement will bring high-profile publicity.  Cross partners with the Secret Service agent (Monica Potter) who botched her assignment, but wait… the movie’s got a rabbit in its hat… and that rabbit has an ace up its sleeve… and director Lee Tamahori (who brought similar intensity to The Edge) handles the sleight-of-hand with slick precision, dispensing just enough information to keep the viewer off guard without resorting to cheap manipulation.  Don’t look for much depth of character here, but Along Came a Spider is well served by everyone involved.  It’s the movie equivalent of a bestseller you’d impulsively buy at the grocery-store checkout, and on those terms it succeeds.

Discharged from the military, special forces war hero Chris Vaughn (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) returns to his hometown to enjoy a peaceful life. Much to his dismay, the town has changed for the worse. The mill, which was the town’s main industry, has closed leaving many out of work. The once peaceful, innocent town is now plagued with a crooked casino, adult sex shops, drugs, and a corrupt police force. After a run-in with the bad guys, Vaughn decides to take his hometown back with a vengance. Lots of action that only The Rock can dish out!

Payback

by admin on Apr.27, 2009, under Action

Porter (Mel Gibson) is a career criminal out for revenge after his partners in crime double-cross him in a heist, do serious bodily harm to him and steal his $70,000 cut of the loot. Not a good move! Porter is back, wants his money, and he’ll go through anyone to get it.

A great support cast including James Coburn, William Devane, and Kris Kristofferson. Lots of edge-of-your-seat action and funny, dead-pan humor. Example: After having his toes broken with a small sledge-hammer, Porter’s girlfriend asks “What happened to you?” A bloody, beat-up Porter responds, “I got hammered!” This is one my favorite Mel Gibson flicks and I highly recommend it.
